Israeli Organizations Working Toward a Sustainable (Food) Future

Israeli Organizations Working Toward a Sustainable (Food) Future

1.) Leket (https://www.leket.org/en/)

Leket Israel (The National Food Bank) is a food-rescue organization that collects surplus meals from hotels, restaurants, catering businesses, and army bases. This organization also distributes surplus food to other non-profit organizations across the nation-state of Israel – whom then donate to other low-income and vulnerable communities. Leket Israel also owns and operates an 1800 dunam parcel of land used to grow and distribute fresh produce to its community partners across the state - including fresh bananas, stone fruits, and other rooted vegetables (including beets). Moreover, this organization donated over 15.5k tons of produce in 2018 with the aid of 19 refrigerated vehicles. Some job and volunteer opportunities exist for those further dedicated to Leket Israel’s goals, mission, and vision.

2.) Heriya Recycling Park (https://www.hiriya.co.il/eng)

Heriya Recycling Park (Dan Region Association) is a municipal waste management facility that categorizes, sorts, and treats municipal solid waste. This waste is then separated with the intention of retaining clean energy from recycled or upcycled waste materials. Heriya Recycling Park treats 50% of the waste stream that enters the facility (30% higher than a national average in Israel), while 50% ends up being placed in a nearby landfill. This site also possesses a wing called the ‘Center for Environmental Education,’ which teaches children and public groups about the importance of composting, consuming less raw materials, and reducing environmental emissions (GHG) – specifically within the context of a rapidly accelerating climate. A public café and common space with games and art installations, made from recycled materials, sets a modern re-created atmosphere from much older resources. Heriya Recycling Park also offers public tours via their website address.

3.) Association for Urban Farming (https://www.urbanfarming.org.il/english?lang=en)

The Association for Urban Farming is a non-profit educational organization that teaches grades from kindergarten to high school about the role of urban farming in combatting food insecurity in urban areas. Based in Tel Aviv, this organization helps establish urban farms, community gardens, and educational centers in neighborhood schools, providing accessibility to nutritious food for urban residents. Moreover, The Association for Urban Farming is engaged in the active research and development of urban agricultural systems (including aquaponics), which are already designed to be replicated in other urban areas across the world. This organization offers internships and opportunities to engage with site-specific neighborhoods and communities at a localized level.

4.) The Israeli Forum for Sustainable Nutrition (https://english.ifsn.org.il)

The Israeli Forum for Sustainable Nutrition is a scientific non-profit organization that aims to “establish a national sustainable food system and food security for all Israelis now and in the future.” This organization also strives to generate public awareness and campaign support for evidence-driven food policy in Israel. Furthermore, this network consists of a dedicated group of professionals including environmental scientists, clinical dieticians, health consultants, and collegiate professors who are working to promote dialogue surrounding critical environmental issues facing communities in Israel today – including the burdens of climate change and pressures from rapid globalization. Members may be contacted for potential research collaborations.

5.) The Environmental Authority (https://www.tel-aviv.gov.il/en/Pages/HomePage.aspx)

The Environmental Authority is an initiative from the Urban Food Policy sector of the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, which aims to create greater accessibility to healthy foods for city residents. Through various partnerships (including Eurovision), The Environmental Authority has been implementing city-wide sustainable projects that incentivize ‘green labels’ for local businesses, monitor the resourcefulness of festivals, and promote renewable energies that are helping Israel advocate toward current sustainability plans, adaptation goals, and mitigation targets.
